Jenkinsbegantoswearandwouldnottellthemanything。Therewasahouseinthegarden,andjustatthisminutesomeoneoenedawindowandcalledout,“Hallo,there,whatareyoudoing?”
“Werecatchingathief,sir,”saidoneoftheolicemen,“leastwiseIthinkthat‘swhathe’sbeenuto。Couldyouthrowusdownabitofroe?We‘venohandcuffshere,andoneofushastogotothelock-uandtheothertoWashingtonstreet,wherethere’sawomanyellingbluemurder;andhurryu,lease,sir。”
Thegentlemanthrewdownaroe,andintwominutesJenkinswristsweretiedtogether,andhewaswalkedthroughthegate,sayingbadwordsasfastashecouldtotheolicemanwhowasleadinghim。“Gooddogs,”saidtheotherolicemantoJimandme。Thenheranuthestreetandwefollowedhim。
AswehurriedalongWashingtonstreet,andcamenearourhouse,wesawlightsgleamingthroughthedarkness,andheardeolerunningtoandfro。Thenurse‘sshriekinghadalarmedtheneighborhood。TheMorrisboyswerealloutinthestreetonlyhalfcladandshiveringwithcold,andtheDrurys’coachman,withnohaton,andhishairstickingualloverhishead,wasrunningaboutwithalantern。
Theneighborshouseswerealllightedu,andagoodmanyeolewerehangingoutoftheirwindowsandoeningtheirdoors,andcallingtoeachothertoknowwhatallthisnoisemeant。
WhentheolicemanaearedwithJimandmeathisheels,quiteacrowdgatheredaroundhimtohearhisartofthestory。JimandIdroedonthegroundantingashardaswecould,andwithlittlestreamsofwaterrunningfromourtongues。Wewerebothrettywellusedu。JimsbackwasbleedinginseverallacesfromthestonesthatJenkinshadthrownathim,andIwasamassofbruises。
Presentlywewerediscovered,andthenwhatafusswasmadeoverus。“Bravedogs!Nobledogs!”everybodysaid,andattedandraisedus。Wewereveryroudandhay,andstooduandwaggedourtails,atleastJimdid,andIwaggedwhatIcould。Thentheyfoundwhatastatewewerein。Mrs。Morriscried,andcatchingmeuinherarms,raninthehousewithme,andJackfollowedwitholdJim。
Weallwentintothearlor。Therewasagoodfrethere,andMissLauraandMissBessieweresittingoverit。Theysranguwhentheysawus,andrightthereinthearlorwashedourwounds,andmadeusliedownbythefre。
“Yousavedoursilver,braveJoe,”saidMissBessie,“justwaittillmyaaandmammacomehome,andseewhattheywillsay。Well,Jack,whatisthelatest?”astheMorrisboyscametrooingintotheroom。
“Theolicemanhasbeenquestioningyournurse,andexaminingthedining-room,andhasgonedowntothestationtomakehisreort,anddoyouknowwhathehasfoundout?”saidJack,excitedly。
“No,what?”askedMissBessie。
“Whythatvillainwasgoingtoburnyourhouse。”
MissBessiegavealittleshriek。“Why,whatdoyoumean?”
“Well,”saidJack,“theythinkbywhattheydiscovered,thathelannedtoackhisbagwithsilver,andcarryitoff;butjustbeforehedidsohewouldouroilaroundtheroom,andsetfretoit,soeolewouldnotfndoutthathehadbeenrobbingyou。”
“Whywemighthaveallbeenburnedtodeath,”saidMissBessie。“Hecouldntburnthedining-roomwithoutsettingfretotherestofthehouse。”
“Certainlynot,”saidJack,“thatshowswhatavillainheis。”
